As a society we are all slowly making little changes to help our environment. Target promotes going green by taking .5 cents off for every bag you use for your groceries. This is a good small incentive but it doesn’t mean much for many costumers. Instead of giving people money for using reusable bags they should charge people like they do at Aldi’s. If you have ever gone to Aldi’s grocery store they encourage you to use reusable bags because they charge nearly .50 cents for a huge bag. And if you ever tried carrying all your groceries in one huge bag you can imagine the potential disaster.

I think more would be done to help the environment if our society became more educated about going green. After watching “Earth day” on Oprah I could see little ways to benefit the environment. I was surprised how some people did not know how to properly recycle. Public relations professionals should work towards finding greater incentives towards going green and making people more aware of the possible hazards our environment is facing.

Toyota has agreed to pay U.S. officials $16.4 million dollars for withholding information about the car’s accelerator defect but do not believe they went against the law. At this point Toyota has lost many costumers and problems will continue to escalate if they do not face the consequences. I’m glad Toyota is trying to accept responsibility by paying $16.4 million to the U.S. officials but that still does not solve the legal issue. Government officials report Toyota knew about the car defect in September and “did not report the car defect within five business days” according to the law.

It looks like Toyota’s crisis has gone to steps 4 of Coomb’s tyologicy of crisis communication strategies. Toyota has taken actions “to appease the public’s involved” but still denies they are legally at fault. I think more actions need to be taken from the media specialists so Toyota’s name is not completely ruined.

I think in the end Toyota will end up facing legal charges, since they put their costumer’s lives at risk by not reporting this majorly hazardous defect. Toyota has lost my respect as a potential buyer because they completely lost my trust. Everyone wants to buy a car from an honest person. I expect the media specialists are working towards gaining the public’s trust as well as avoiding these recent legal charges. I am anxious to see what will be done in the future!

I have always heard that everything in excess is not good for you. Could that be texting to? An article from the St. Louis dispatch in the “health” section addressed the new pains that are arising from texting. Texting as many of us know requires a repetitive motion that can similarly cause the same pain as repeated use of writing on a keyboard. Brewington argues that texting may also lead to shoulder pain from hunching over while texting, hand and arm pain. Brewington continues, stating tips that will help an individual avoid getting sore thumbs from texting.

This article was both amusing and quite alarming that our society has become so dependent on texting. Texting has now become an essential part of our phone plan. I am guilty for texting more than I probably should but it makes you question how society is changing as a whole. Our society currently faces sexting, bad texting adequate, and now physical pains from texting. While phones provide a great safety measure, a conversation is quickly becoming second to texting someone hello. From a public relations standpoint, I think the focus of the article should be aimed at exercise with social benefits. Either going exercising with a partner for a run or playing volleyball with some friends.

Do you know where your meat comes from? We know there is a process from the cow to the deli but are we aware of the conditions our meat is placed under? Every day many Americans pick up packaged meat from the deli section. Whether they chose beef or chicken is irrelevant. Picking up that packaged meat means that they trust that meat is safe for their family to eat.

According to the website www.foodincmovie.com, there is a documentary called Food, Inc. that exposes “American’s industrialized food system and how it affects our environment, health, economy, and worker’s rights”. In my nutrition class I witnessed part of the documentary’s most disturbing realities from behind the scenes. On one farm the chickens sat next to each other in their feces and they were so large they were only able to walk a few steps before falling back down. To keep up with the high demands of meat in the United States farms are growing chickens at faster, abnormal rates . From a public relations perspective I think people need to know what they are eating so they can make their own educated decision whether they want to support these causes. I plan on viewing this film in its entirety and I hope many others plan on doing the same. How much of the truth is being covered by governmental regulations?

SeaWorld is now facing a crisis, after an experienced trainer from SeaWorld was attacked from the largest killer whale in captivity named Tilikum. The news media emphasized that this was the killer whale’s third attack since 1991 and he still remains a part of the public performance. As I reviewed the chapters over spring break I applied Coomb’s crisis communication strategies to the killer whale attack that happened in Sea World.

Coomb’s steps to respond to a crisis include; attack the accuser, denial, excuse, justification, ingratiation, corrective action, and full apology. All the facts pertaining to this event are factual so sea world can not claim the facts are false or deny there is a crisis. Right now SeaWorld claims that the trainer previously worked with Tilikum that morning and the animal had worked cooperatively. To shift the blame off of Sea World they say it is uncertain why Tilikum reacted in this way. Right now SeaWorld is involved in the “ingratiation” step which states that actions are being taken to put the public at ease. Sea world is currently working on better safety procedures so an event like this never happens again. Do you think major changes will take place in SeaWorld or will these claimed safety procedures be only comforting words?

Mark McGwire has now joined the cardinals as the hitting coach. He has recently been coaching cardinals players Skip Schumaker and Brendan Ryan. After recently admitting to taking steroids in the past the cardinals has managed to look past these events and give Mark McGwire a fresh start. Mark McGwire has openly talked about his struggle to overcome his steroid addiction and I think many people respect him for finally admitting to his previous steroid use. Over the radio I have heard both sides of the story. There are still some people who will not forgive Skip Schumaker for the repeated use of steroids while others have forgiven his mistake.

Like the presidential election the public is never completely one sided about every public decision. I think Mark McGwire will win his fans back as long his contribution to the cardinals pays off. People just want to see results and if the cardinals win games all loyal fans will be happy. Bringing Mark McGwire to the cardinals may be a good decision from a public relations perspective because Mark McGwire brings publicity and this will promote the cardinals. From a public relations standpoint do you think Mark McGwire will be a positive icon for the cardinals?

Was it a good idea for Tiger Woods to present an apology to the public? I think as a national idol for many people it was necessary for him to apologize. As a person who has been admired by many for his golf swing, he will now be looked at in a new light. He is no longer considered this perfect family man that many previously imagined, so I think some people feel a little deceived. I don’t know if he will ever regain the respect he once had but I think the worst part is that he was considered a role model for many young golf athletes.

On CNN, a few young athletes were interviewed and some said with tears in their eyes that it changed their whole perspective of this one major role model in their life. While what he did was extremely wrong I think it can’t be entirely blamed on him. The media portrays professional athletes as superior human beings so people eventually begin to worship them. Like many celebrities when someone is admired constantly it begins to go to their head. So celebrities may engage in inexcusable activities because they feel no consequences apply to them. Can the media as well as their followers be part to blame?

The media loves Simon Cowell for his blunt, honest, and comical nature. He may make rude comments and make people cry but he never brings inappropriate comments on American Idol. Many may be upset to see Simon leave but how will the media react to this replacement?

Public relations chose Howard Stern because along with him will come many loyal followers. Looking at his history, he has provided entertainment for many on a popular radio show. However, are public relations aware of the risk? Can Howard Stern avoid making vulgar comments or with this family friendly show need censoring? I wonder whether Howard Stern can maintain the same level of professionalism as Simon Cowell . If this is possible he may not lose any current American Idol fans.

There is a possibility that bringing Howard Stern to American Idol may lead to a thriving turnout. He has successfully kept the interest of many since he has stayed on the radio for so long. Public relations may defend their reason for choosing Howard Stern just by his yearly income. Sterns makes 100 million dollars a year compared to the 50 million Simon Cowell makes. Will Howard Stern be able to effectively fill Simon’s role as a judge for American idol?

Some information was obtained from a newspaper article called Startribune. The article was received on January 17, 2010. This is a popular newspaper from Minnesota….

Growing up my family rarely relied on technology for entertainment. Board games, books, rollerblading, bike riding, and basketball were some of my childhood hobbies. Nowadays everyone uses technology. When I need to access information immediately, Google is the first search engine to pop up from internet explorer.

Technology has become such an essential part of our everyday life. It also has been proven to be a useful tool for finding reliable information. Imagine for a moment what you would do without the right to use Google. China may be now faced with this predicament.

When Google received threats by China last week, the United States decided to take action. Due to the seriousness of the threats, the United States stopped censoring results in the search engine. Before this threat Google had agreed with the Chinese government to censor all Google results. Now the United States expects an explanation from the Chinese government as to why this “cyber-attack” occurred. I wonder whether the Chinese government will admit to the threat or respond defensively to the United States. How do you think the government in China will respond to the United States motive? How can the government in China reestablish trust with Google?

Some information was obtained from stltoday.com and from a television clip from CNN……

How much does an Olympic athlete eat before they compete? There are twenty eight chefs nationwide competing for this challenging yet rewarding mission. The preparation is extensive because the chef must prepare themselves for every possible problem they might encounter. The chefs must present a menu that is culturally respectful for all countries and only a few chefs receive this opportunity to host the Olympics.

I can’t imagine the extensive research these chefs must go through to determine the food choices that are most appropriate. Not all of the names of the twenty eight chefs competing were revealed but I was excited to find that two of these chefs were from the St. Louis area. As a chef I wonder what qualifications they had to meet in order to be narrowed down to twenty eight positions.

A chef must market themselves much themselves as much as a public relations professional. There is always the possibility Rachel Ray, who is known by many, could be one of the finalists. Like a public relations professional, what sort of characteristics must a chef have in order to become so widely known? If you were to represent one of these chefs what would you say that might convince the judges to choose them?
